Amanda Morrison’s father has not forgiven her for eloping with the fallen soldier, Jack Morrison. She is forced to live in seclusion and avoid the haughty Duke of Norwood when he comes to court her half-sister. No great problem, since she dislikes the man, except that the more she gets to know him, the harder it is to ignore her desires. Regency Romance by Allison Lane; originally published by Signet and the winner of the Holt Medallion for Best Regency Romance of 1996.

I was initially reluctant to read this book as the plot setup wasn't the predictable Regency rom-com that makes comfortable holiday reading: a widow uncompromising and independent to the point of alienating her family and having definite issues with a bullying father; an arrogant and disdainful Duke, with a reclusive personality, constrained to marry the widow's stepsister. Not exactly standard fare for a traditional Regency HEA. However, I was riveted by the story, found myself totally engaged in the leading characters' reflections on past happy and unhappy marriages to the point that I could barely put the book down. As a result, I suffered 2 rather sleepless nights and have been thinking about some of the author's insights for several days afterwards. This book was rated 'excellent' on the former Good Ton website (a reference for Traditional Regency
Reading) and was honored to be included as one of the "Favorite Books" for its "wonderfully in-depth characterization". I feel this book deserves much greater exposure and am so glad that Amazon has released it in Kindle Format. I have recently purchased the original Signet paperback to add to my 'keepers' bookshelf. A great traditional regency read.

The Prodigal Daughter edition by Allison Lane Romance eBooks Reviews
Love this angle and the book was a good read. No over the top love scenes. Good clean reading and relaxing as well.
I haven't been able to finish this book. I haven't totally dismissed it but it certainly hasn't held my interest.
Enjoyed the subject and the outcome.
The characters all matter which is amazing. Their struggles are made very real to the reader. It should have been difficult to be anything but jubilant over their triumphs. Except none of it is incredibly romantic so instead of jubilation I felt deep satisfaction. I'll definitely reread this one.
A good story with a heroine who has courage and intelligence. Well-written and plotted, with scenes that stick in your mind for their vividness. There are some surprising twists in the plot as the H and h grow to know each other and themselves better. Definitely a keeper and worth re-reading.
Great Book & I was really into the story. I was ready to give it 5 stars when at the climax of the story there was a really bad & glaring error. The elopement letter was signed by the heroine, Amanda, instead of her half-sister. Wow! What a way to stop the flow. I had to stop & go back and reread it. Yup, the letter was signed Amanda but it was clearly from her half-sister apologizing & explaining why she couldn't marry the hero. I can't believe no one else has pointed this out yet. I hope the author fixes this because it was extremely distracting and a little irritating to me right there, coming up to the end of the book when I was anxiously reading to discover how everything was going to come out. However, this probably shows how good was the rest of the story, because otherwise the error probably wouldn't have bothered me so much. )
